History

Karunagappally Taluk Urban Cooperative Bank Ltd. No. Q 455, incorporated on 29th June 1973, has been a significant institution in the socio-economic development of the Karunagappally region, Kerala. Founded with the goal of providing financial services to local communities, the bank started by offering affordable loans and deposit schemes to small-scale farmers, traders, and working-class individuals. It received its Reserve Bank of India (RBI) license on 1st March 1996, enabling it to expand its operations and improve service delivery. Under the visionary leadership of Sri. B. M. Sherif, who served as the Founder President for 38 years, the bank established itself as a trusted community institution, promoting financial inclusion and supporting the welfare of the people. Following the untimely passing of Shri R. Ramachandran, the former Chairman, Adv. M.S. Thara, a former member of the Women’s Commission, took over as the Chairman, ensuring the bank's continued progress. A significant turning point came with the appointment of Sri. B. Omanakuttan, former General Manager of Kerala Bank, whose leadership brought a new phase of technological modernization to the bank. Under his guidance, the bank introduced digital banking systems, enhancing operational efficiency and expanding its services. Over the years, the bank has been actively involved in social welfare initiatives, such as women’s empowerment, self-help groups, and agricultural development. The bank has played a pivotal role in fostering financial inclusion through microloans, affordable credit, and financial literacy programs, which have empowered the local population, particularly marginalized communities. Despite challenges from commercial banks and changing regulations, the bank has continued to thrive due to its strong community ties and focus on innovation. Looking ahead, Karunagappally Taluk Urban Cooperative Bank remains committed to sustainable growth, social welfare, and technological advancement, ensuring its ongoing relevance in the region.
